Audition

Process

There is no formal application to the UNC School of the Arts to receive an audition.  We ask that you submit the following:

 

  • Cover letter (stating your goals and what you hope to recieve from a graduate or post-graduate program in opera)
  • Resume
  • Head Shot
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Transcripts from all secondary institutions you may have attended*
  • A Mandatory Information Form (this will be sent to you via e-mail, once we have recieved your materials)
  • Pre-screening CD or DVD for PAC Sopranos Only –
    Pre-screening CD or DVD should include 4 arias representing at least 3 languages — Please do not send MP3 files.

Audition requirements

MM Auditions

  • Five Selections of contrasting style in four languages; English, French, German** and Italian.
  • Three of the selections must be opera arias.
  • One of the selections must be written after 1950.
  • No Prescreening Required

PAC Auditions

  • Seven Selections of contrasting style in four languages:  English, French, German** and Italian.
  • Five selections must be opera arias.
  • One selection must be from an oratorio.
  • One of the selections must be written after 1950.
  • Pre-screening CD or DVD for PAC Sopranos Only

**Russian or Czech may be substituted for German

 

For Both PAC and MM Auditions

Auditions will be held in two parts. The first part will be the singing audition.  After your audition the committee will decide if a call back should be scheduled for the same day. At the call back you will have the opportunity to work with a conductor and coach on musical, diction, and dramatic issues involving your repertoire.

All applicants will be tested on basic musicianship skills, including sight-reading, keyboard, and language during the call back.

Decisions

Candidates will be informed of the Institute’s decisions by April 1, 2014 and asked to formally apply for admission.
